The Story
When a lifelong gang member finally finds something worth living for. He is forced to ask the question he has
avoided his whole life. Was this fate, or is it La Mala Vida. As the streets prepare to answer for him.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT “NANDO”
In seventh grade I was labeled a gang member for speaking Spanish and playing soccer with my friends. By high school I was wearing a mask not because I was a fighter, but because vulnerability invited fights I
couldn't win. I never fully belonged to that world. But I watched it consume people I loved. What I never saw was a film that told the whole truth that gang life isn't built on hate but on belonging. That
the cycle destroys not because it's evil but because it offers something real and then takes everything in
return.La Mala Vida is my answer to the question I've carried most of my life: was it fate, or did we choose it?
As a director I'm drawn to the quiet moments where men almost speak, almost touch, almost heal. Natural
light. Close proximity. Compositions that sit with characters long enough to see past the masks they wear
for the world. This story is for every kid who left the soccer field and never found their way back. And for every father and son who ran out of time to say what needed saying.— Fernando "Nando" Galarza Carter / On the Horizon Films
